Excel - Cant Imagine a day without Excel

Reviewed on 13/5/2020

the overall experience with excel cannot be described in one word or in one sentence. I have recommend all my friends to use the excel in their daily routine. Excel is a part of my daily work and it had simplified all my works.

Pros

I have been using the excel for the past 20 years and the most excel features i use on my daily routine are the pivot table, vlook functions, graphs, calculations and it keeps on going. all the monthly salary calculations, deductions, are all compiled into one sheet and its very easy to share the files with password protection facility. i have purchased both home office 365 and for business. very compatible with the microsoft teams. Another feature of excel is the low

Cons

everything in excel is very easy to learn, but only while using Macro and Micro features, i had found a little bit of difficulties. but using the help button itself, the same can be resolved within few minutes. the total features in excel in overwhelming and i feel like that i have been using only less than 20% of the total features of excel.

Alternatives Considered

Zoho Sheet, Numbers and Google Sheets

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Excel

Excel is more user friendly. Excel can be accessed across all my devices and also on all platforms. by purchasing, one license, i received 5 extra licenses which i could share with my family. The onedrive feature attached with excel helped me in solving the storage issues too.

J.L. Microsoft Excel Review

Reviewed on 6/2/2023

Microsoft Excel is my number one choice when it comes to the process of data entry, storage and visualization in an all-in-one software. Though it was a little difficult to begin using the software, I quickly got the hang of it with help of their quick pop-up guides that provide background on every feature. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that's looking to conduct business or small assignments and everything in between.

Pros

Every cell in my workbook can be filled with a colour of my choice. This helps me highlight important data from the rest or improve the plain white background design.

Cons

When using Microsoft Excel on my mobile device, even though dark mode can be activated to change the theme of the app, the workbook itself can't change to black with white text. This affects my eyesight when working at night and the only way to fix this is my highlighting every cell and manually changing the colour of it from white to black. After this is done, the text in every cell has to be changed to white in order to contrast the black background.

I would rather use Numbers for anything and everything.

Reviewed on 21/4/2020

I have been in educational leadership for over 25 years. For all of that time I have had to run budgets, strategize enrollment projections and much, much more. For the vast majority of that time I had to utilize Excel. It was the go to vehicle for each and everyone of my treasures and book keepers to keep track of our financials. Even when I was setting up documentation on my own, I always turned to excel. However, as an educator with no accounting training I always had to turn to an expert to set up my formulas and interwoven sheets. I knew what I needed them to do, knew that Excel could function that way, but making that happen was well beyond me. It was always very frustrating. After many years I founded my own program and suddenly had no one else to turn to to arrange my tracking systems. I was stuck. I had to figure it out. Or did I? Because I am a Mac user and as I was struggling to set my Excel sheets up, I suddenly and excitedly stumbled upon Numbers. I must say, while Excel can do whatever you want it to, Numbers can do it better, with more intuitive functions. I imagine for an accountant there may be more to this picture, but for a lay user who depends of ease of use, clarity of function and ultimate success, I am happy to leave Excel in my tool bar while I create my budgets, rosters, calendars and more on Numbers.

Pros

For decades Excel was the only way to go. Its ability to utilize formulas to create the documentation we needed was invaluable.

Cons

It is clunky and hard to intuit for novice users. I have always had to impose upon other users to set my sheets up to do what I wanted to do.

The Spreadsheet Standard

Reviewed on 7/12/2022

Excel is the daily tool for business. It isn't the only spreadsheet program available, but it is often the metric by which all others are measured or strive to achieve.

Pros

Excel is one of those programs that has every spreadsheet tool you could ever imagine and if you can't imagine it someone else probably has. The amount of functionality built into Excel would definitely be one of its most desirable features. Each iteration of Excel also integrates more of the commonly used tools that get developed by both Microsoft and the community of users and businesses built around it.

Cons

Major changes between releases caused some friction, but this generally was centered on the user interface. Compatibility could always be managed. Working with charts was difficult early on, but this has also been greatly improved over time. It is difficult to come up with much when this software receives so much attention from its developers to make it meet the users' needs.

There's a learning curve but...

Reviewed on 15/2/2023

Pros

The toolbars are organized well and it makes putting "sheets" together a bit easier. If math is required or some type of organization, you need to simply put in formulas. There are templates for many things projects you may have and the formulas are already there. If you start from scratch, you get those formulas are in, then it's a cakewalk from there. I haven't had a single issue where the program stops responding or a file can't be opened which is a huge plus.

Cons

There's a learning curve for sure as you do need to know your way around if you don't have some type of base knowledge. Again, you can use templates but that can't always save you and you'll spend an eternity trying to get what you need done. The cool thing is you can find free files online using good ol' google for a project you want to complete where the formulas are done for you.

So many possibilities

Reviewed on 17/2/2023

I have used Excel since I started using a computer and it helped me love using a computer! It just really has given me so many opportunities.

Pros

I love that you can basically do anything with it! The cell and functions feature really opens up a world of possibilities! Practically could build an app with it!

Cons

It can be a bit complex and hard to relocate things a second time around... even third or fourth time! But the help feature makes it a simple fix.

Microsoft excel the best software for financial valuation and modelling

Reviewed on 24/12/2019

As a bookkeeper i used excel to develop the databases of the customers, excel saves my time when preparing weekly management reports because i can quickly produce charts and pivot tables to support the word or written reports. I also make use of advanced excel functions such as VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, CHOOSE, SUMIF and COUNTIF which saves time to do my work and prepare reports.
As a researcher i also make use of excel to develop regression models there by establishing the relationship between the variables thus used excel for data analysis in research.

Pros

Microsoft excel arranges data or information in an orderly and logical manner which makes easier for analysis. Through the use of excel spreadsheet it will be easier for analysts to carry out extensive analysis the use of advanced excel functions such as CHOOSE function (used in financial modelling for scenario analysis and SUMIF and COUNTIF used when dealing with huge amount of data.
Excel is also used to build nice charts and tables such as bar graphs, pie charts and pivot tables. It is also used in trend analysis and regression and correlation analysis. The other general advantage of Microsoft excel is that it helps analysts to make use of other software such as SPSS and Eviews.

Cons

The main disadvantage of excel is that it needs more time and attention for practice for the analyst to fully benefit from it. There is a problem of garbage in garbage out because of human error such as ommited negative signs and incorrect arrangement of rows may not be harmful but when they erode investor trust or cause a loss of investment opportunity. The other con of excel is that it contains several functions which needs time for an analyst to learn.

Excel is a tool that optimizes many processes in an organization

Reviewed on 16/1/2019

In my experience I started using Excel to create my school hours and after university, then in college I gave application for results of reports and database creation with records that I should take, in my current job I must work with Excel to generate the calculation sheets with the full staff that will attend each day, plus the notes when they are evaluated are downloaded in excel sheet from the application that is used for the purpose of the evaluations, in addition to possible presentation of reports and dynamic dashboards that it must generate for the management with respect to my part of the work.
The reality my experience has been satisfactory and I am always comfortable working with excel.

Pros

Excel is a tool that I have always liked because in addition to presenting a pretty nice design in its latest versions, its features allow you to take thousands of benefits, from list of products with prices, to generating lists of nominees to know how much you should charge each month, these applications can even be optimized through its powerful tool such as MACROS, which allows us to apply programming to optimize processes that must be performed very frequently. We can not let go that allows us to generate accounts reports to our liking, allowing the possibility of using the graphics that best fit for our presentation, this just to mention one of its valuable applications. The reality Excel has become a valuable tool for many processes within a company, since their applications are endless. Its simplicity to handle it makes that anyone with a little practice can handle it quickly

Cons

The tool has evolved a lot, providing many advantages today that make it have few negative details, so I think that although it can still improve, I do not see very negative things that should be highlighted.

Still the champion of spreadsheet software!

Reviewed on 22/3/2019

My main purpose when using Excel these days is for conveying complex ideas to different stakeholders, whether they are other team members and colleagues, or clients. We prepare our project proposals in Excel, we calculate our advertising and operating budgets in Excel, and we sometimes even use it to build out calculators that help to take complex math around ad spend budgeting and make it into a user-friendly experience (with a little bit of formatting help to make it look nice, of course).

Pros

I often need to do financial projections as part of my work, as well as organizing lists, information about different events that are being organized, structuring new projects that are being undertaken, and various other calculations that just need to happen in the course of my business, on a day-to-day basis. In other words, its fair to say that I basically "live" in Excel. The thing I love most about this tool is just how much you can do with it, when you take the time to really understand how to use it. Excel is simple enough to use as a place to keep a list of people who are coming to an event organized, and complex enough basically act like a mini database. The flexibility to use a single tool in so many different ways is one of my favorite things about this software.

Cons

Even though I've used this software for many many years, probably a decade or more, and most people regard me as an expert in it, there's still functions and applications of it that I haven't yet mastered. There's so much going on under the hood that it's next to impossible to know absolutely every single function that this piece of software can accomplish for you. Which means that if I'm trying to do something a little bit more complex than my usual activities, and I need to stretch my own limits on what I know how to do with the software, I can often lose an hour or two hunting for how-to guides and videos on the internet to make sure that I get the result I really want. However, once I get it, I've just added another tool to my toolbox that continues to make the software even more powerful. So, all in all, even that is time well spent, in my opinion.

With Excel you can sort the information easily and quickly, and separate tables and columns

Reviewed on 24/6/2018

Drawing graphics quickly and easily
Printing facilities being possible to preview the print on screen. You can print vertically and horizontally
Files can be protected with a password for greater security
Manage headers and footers, titles, margins, automatic numbering of pages, automatic insertion of date and time
Allows manipulating information directly, moving or changing size objects
Allows you to see two or more applications on the screen at the same time
Realization of arithmetic operations with formulas

Pros

Use the conditional format

Excel users can format their spreadsheets using different color tones, bold and italic, to differentiate between the columns and bring the most important data to the front. This function can be useful in the presentation of accounting information, such as the benefit before taxes and the balance that will be transferred by the company. Users can select an appropriate color scheme using the quick analysis button, and then by using the Format tab.

Help identify trends

When presenting the data in the form of tables or graphs, it may be useful to include middle lines, which explicitly detail the key trends that emerge from the information. This can help demonstrate key points to other users in a direct way - for example, an executive from a different department during a board meeting. Excel allows trend lines to extend beyond the graph, to provide predictions of activity in the future - and such forecasts can help companies develop their future strategy.

Collect data

Excel can be used to carry information from different files and documents together, so it exists in one place. As well as raw data and information from other spreadsheets, it is possible to import text and images. Other objects can be added using the Insert tab, spreadsheets or they can be added to the file.

Cons

Disadvantages of Excel
Some people consider graphics insufficient or of poor quality
It is a payment program that does not have an affordable price available to everyone
It is a program unable to handle dates before 1990
Information may be lost when the application is divided into too many files
Files take up a lot of space
Viruses can be attached to an Excel file through macros
It is not an application of which one can be self-taught, but in general courses are needed to be able to get the necessary party
It is not useful at the domestic level
Does not work to be customized with financial subsets
Each operation must be entered manually
It requires, for your needs, a powerful computer and in good condition
Only compatible with Windows and Mac
It usually presents unexpected errors that cause the program to close abruptly and unrecoverable data is lost

Always faithful

Reviewed on 28/2/2020

I love excel. It is easily one of the most underrated software programs in the world in my opinion. People like to talk about spreadsheets all day long, but give credit where credit is due. MS Excel is the only "spreadsheet" in the world if you ask me. Not only can you use it for basic functions, but you can calculate with it, you can graph data with it, and so much more. I am likely still what most would call a "beginner" user of this software, even though I have been using it for decades, and I find it helps me to accomplish tasks and track data in such an easy way. I love learning to use the functions. There is an entire world of possibilities with it. For anyone thinking "its just for spreadsheets and organizing", you are wrong. I see a lot of new technology and software in my role, but I always count on Excel to make my job, and my life, easier to manage.

Pros

Easy to use. From basic to next level functions, you don't have to be a computer whiz to figure it out. If you ever have a question, search the help function. If you want to do something complex and don't want to read help article after help article, just google it. Everyone uses excel, or at least they should, and someone out there has done what you are trying to do. Simple design. I do not need fancy graphics and displays when I am trying to accomplish a task...I just want to get my job done. Excel is a hit for me. Straight and to the point. Capable of so much more than you could ever imagine.

Cons

If there is something missing from Excel, I haven't found it. In fact, I think you would have to be an engineer to find something that excel cannot do for you. It's not going to build you a website and it likely can't do your taxes for you (at least not out of the box); but if data is your world, if organization is your world, and excel can't help you accomplish the task, you probably shouldn't be using a computer at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great Software if You Are Trained to Use It

Reviewed on 23/9/2019

At my workplace we needed a database but did not have the funds to purchase one but with Excel, we were able to meet our needs. Through using the conditional formatting, IF/THEN functionality and sorting we were able to build something that met our needs and saved us money!

Pros

Microsoft Excel has great functionality and can do a great diversity of tasks from simple math to complex data tracking tools. My two favorite functions of Excel include IF/THEN functionality and the ability to sort. The IF/THEN function is especially useful because if it's broad applications. For example if I had a two columns across the top with the categories "Name" and "Paid?" then I can make it so that my spread sheet would turn a persons name red if the response in the paid box next to their name said no. I also love being able to use this function in the application of using a date. For example, if a date is past, then it can flag the date. This is useful when trying to meet deadlines and staying on a timeline. This tool can also be used to clean up your spreadsheet. For example if you want to clear all data from a certain date on, you can do that with the IF/THEN tool. My other favorite thing about this software is the ability to sort. This is especially useful when you have large amounts of data because it allows you to tailor what you want to see and it will only show the data you've selected while still having all the other data hidden. Turn the filters off and all your data is still there. When using these two favorites of mine in tandem you get even more use out of this software.

Cons

I feel like this software has a steep learning curve. I took an intermediate excel class and an advanced excel class in my workplace and those were extremely helpful to understand how this software works. I feel like anyone can jump into it and figure out very basic functionality of this software but to reach the full potential of excel some training is needed. Luckily there are a lot of great videos on YouTube where you can learn a lot on how to use excel!

Microsoft Excel - Most complete and advance spreadsheet application

Reviewed on 26/2/2019

My over all experience with the software has been nothing but awesome and wouldn't not trade it for any other spreadsheet application on the market. My main love of the software is the ability to record and or write macros using the VBA editor, on a basic, intermediate and advance level which really streamline my day to day workflow which saves me hundreds of hours on and average.

Pros

Microsoft Excel - is one of the most complete and advance spreadsheet application currently on the market. The better question would be, what can't it accomplish as this is an application that is used across the board in many companies and careers. It has an awesome ribbon feature which houses many groups of frequently used tools and is super customizable. I doubt that there is any one person that can house all knowledge about this one application. Just to list a few of what can be done:

* Write basic, intermediate and advance formulas and functions to carry out your day to day work.
* Create basic, intermediate and advance conditional formatting to style your sheet and or highlight specific areas and or thing on the spreadsheet to draw focus.
* You can create your own custom group to house your own list of preferred tools to be available at your finger tips.
* It comes equipped with a quick access toolbar to hold frequently used tools right at the top of the sheet which is super easy to access and is something I use at all times while carrying out my day to day routines.
* I love the clean and improved UI [User Interface] version over version.
* It has collapsible tabs and commands to give you more screen real estate when working on small screen devices and or monitors.
* The Developer option is the go to tab when working with VBA and Marcos.
* It comes equipped with the option to record and or write macros using the VBA editor, allowing you to automate your work flow.

Cons

I am not able to think about a con at the moment with so many pros available.

Excel is still king, but....

Reviewed on 28/7/2020

I used Excel to save me countless hours when I was a student data manager for a Tennessee school district. Being able to record or write macros so that tasks are automated -- that's priceless, and I'm grateful for Excel's role in that.

As I said, I've created an application using Excel that is used by some school districts in Tennessee to save work hours (in some cases, shrinking time spent from 5 hours or more to 5 minutes). I've been able to carve out a small business doing so.

Pros

Familiar to many office users
Handles spreadsheet functions very well
Highly customizable
Has relatively easy macro creation for automation of repeated tasks, which allowed me to create a customized spreadsheet application used by school districts in Tennessee
Uses Visual Basic for macros and code creation, and VB is a relatively simple, easy-to-read language

Cons

When it comes to standard use (entering data and running calculations), there's not much to dislike except that Excel costs money if you're an individual or a business. Google Sheets does not, and Sheets added macro recording not long ago.

Neither Excel nor Google Sheets has what I would consider great customer service. I mean, there's a wealth of information online about either which gets you past most obstacles, but there's no one I've found to talk to about issues such as the one described below.

At some point recently, a pop-up message has begun showing up about Excel waiting for another application to complete an OLE request (or something similar). This stops my code in its tracks, and since the point of programming is to eliminate button clicks and manual oversight, it defeats the purpose. Based on my research, I see that the error is even popping up for users who are using Excel with no macros or VB code -- very frustrating, and the "simple" fixes suggested in some places have not worked for me or many others. (The same code triggering this messages still runs well on an older, slower machine. It doesn't make sense that Excel would have problems on a newer, faster PC.)

Excel

Reviewed on 27/7/2020

Several years ago I took our Settlement Statement forms [from Word] and set them up in Excel - with Excel's capability of merging cells, its ability to put different formulas in different cells, and having several sheets available in each "workbook" so you can change the formatting of each section, it is like Excel was made for doing Settlement Statements! You can put a formula in one place [say, to prorate the amount of tax due by the Seller and the Purchaser] and put a link to the formula in another place, which automatically inserts the answer in that spot. Any time some information changes [say, the number of days being prorated in the tax example above], you just have to change the number of days in the formula and it automatically updates the total in both places!

Pros

I use Excel to prepare monthly accounting reports. I love CSV files! You can pull all kinds of information from your accounting program into a CSV file, remove any unneeded information for your particular report, edit the content and change the formatting to make your reports look exactly how you want them to fairly quickly.

When you have several columns of numbers, you can put a formula in under the first column you want to add. Then copy that "total" cell and select the following columns that you also want to be totaled and paste it into the "total" row for each column at the same time and it automatically adds and inserts the total for each column.

Cons

The different formulas you can add to an Excel report are great and makes it easy to add totals for certain information; however, it is a little difficult to know the correct formulas and how to input them. I would like to have a reference guide listing various formulas and what they are for - the only lists I have found do not explain what each formula does. There could be a reference guide, but I have not found one yet.

Also, when you need to merge some cells and add text to the resulting cell, it would be nice if the cell height would automatically expand and shrink back down as the contents of the cell changes. I usually have to manually change the height, although not always, so there must be some trick to do that which I have not caught on to yet.

This Product Has Very Useful and Extensive Capabilities

Reviewed on 28/2/2019

Elaborating on my favorite features of Excel, the following more specific functions are of tremendous help to me on a regular and ongoing basis:
-The ability to easily sort lists based on any piece of your data, (for example, sorting by last name, by zip code, but dollar amounts, by dates, etc.) On top of that, you can sort by multiple data at once with one click of a button.
-The formulas you can customize and insert into your workbooks are phenomenal. The program essentially does the math for you saving time and effort once you create and insert a formula. These can be very simple or very complex depending on your specific needs.
-The graphs and charts Excel can create based on data you enter into a workbook are wonderful. Often when I create presentations for our board of directors, particularly when reporting on key data, the graphic element these add is incredibly helpful. There are multiple different types of charts and graphs available, and each of those is entirely able to be customized, from font to colors, to data included, and more. Even better, these can be used outside of Excel once created. They are easily copied and pasted into Word, PowerPoint, etc. to suit your needs as well, which I also do pretty frequently.

Pros

Microsoft Excel is truly amazing. I have used it for SO many things including the following:
-Creating simple lists or databases
-Utilizing more complex rules and formulas within my data
-Creating a TON of different type of charts and graphs for data analysis and reporting
These are definitely my top three favorite features and capabilities, and those that I use most frequently. In addition, everything can be customized to meet your needs and preferences in Excel as well. Fonts can be changed in size/type/color/style, cells can be highlighted, and charts and graphs can be customized in these same ways as well.

Cons

There is nothing I dislike about Excel, but I know that its capabilities are far beyond my knowledge and ability. It can seem complicated, but once you learn how to utilize all of its features, it can truly be an asset in so many ways. A personal goal of mine is to get some more training in that area so that I can take advantage of this software's capabilities to the full extent.

Regular user of Excel 2019 Pro... I like it!

Reviewed on 9/10/2020

For the money, it is an overall excellent performer that has never gotten stuck....bug free. It can handle large lists of numbers quite well (up to 1,048,576 rows or 16,384 columns). Obviously, if you need to do data exploration like a Data Scientist on tens of millions of rows then you'd want to look at a different tool. The main target audience is general business. I've used Excel on the job since the mid 1980's.

Pros

Sometimes you might need to record your business travel related expenses and time, to get reimbursed, but you don't have expensive software to track it online. Other times, you might want a quick chart, to explain a trend in some transaction data being measured. Yet other times, you might want to collaborate, to allow other users to update a spreadsheet in real-time without waiting for one user to finish, unlock, then notify the rest. Power users might want to use it's equation solver, such as for a curve fit to some data points. I had written VBA macros behind the scenes, to extract some data to a separate new page, perform calculations, and save a result on a network drive automatically. Excel 2019 is a rock solid performer that does not get stuck. For communicating out your typical company financial reports, Excel is the general industry standard.

Cons

I would like to see more flexibility to specify different types of curved line charts, bordering on the scientific. At times, making changes is less intuitive, such as when plotting multiple lines on the same chart with a moving average line, and with the kind of intervals and tick mark labels you want. If it just did a little more then I wouldn't need to export the data to something else (like Python) to do it the hard way.

Excel Review

This program is great for making budgets, payroll, forecasts, reports, statements, calculators, inventory programs, but it is also a great tool for graphically displaying the research part of a thesis. Using functions and formulas, it also enables you to perform financial calculations and mathematical tasks. A particular company can solve its organizational and operational problems wit Excel, too. The time spent on a task can be greatly reduced by the program.
Excel is excellent for both private, professional and business use, too. Very good. I can only recommend it to everyone!

Pros

The software is well-designed, accurate, precize and transparent. It is easy to manage and offers new opportunities all the time. It is doing its job very well. The application is very useful for me, I use it daily on both PC and Android device. Thanks to OneDrive, where I stop working on one device, I can continue on the other. I can easily work with it anywhere! That's great! It does its job on both Windows and Android. The modern version of Excel with its new built-in tools helps me get more out of my data. Available in all languages. Turn data into useful information. In spreadsheets, Excel is the best solution if you want to record a small amount of data in a variety of ways and look for relationships between them.
Even if you are unfamiliar with using database programs, Excel modules, formulas allow you to create complete databases, join multiple spreadsheets - even to a professional level for a statement, calculation task, and so on. Excel also benefits data miners because Pivot tables are very easy to handle and the Power Pivot module helps them a lot. And Power BI is deeply integrated with Excel, making direct publishing possible. The Help Center is very good, you can work with it step by step. Anyone can become a professional user of Excel with it (like me). I can only recommend.

Cons

Occasionally stops for a few seconds during editing. Many times it does not paste the formulas properly and moves the pasted text elsewhere. Sometimes it can process a 5-page document in 20 minutes. When you open a large file, it removes or does not display the entered formulas. Many times it freezes or crashes during the workflow of large files. Sometimes Excel opens in a different language and I always have to switch to my native language afterwards. Fonts are often confused. Excel cannot open two documents of the same name.

Microsoft Excel Review

Reviewed on 5/3/2020

I have been using Microsoft Excel for over 10 years now and I still continue to use the program on a weekly basis to conduct my work. Excel is a useful and efficient program and you can achieve productive and captivating results once you get a hang of the features and functionalities that it offers. My advice to beginners and if you really want to become a pro at excel, you need to use the program frequently and do your own research to better understand the functionalities. Excel is not a database program and is not equipped to store large volumes of data, that is the job of Microsoft Access and other database programs out there. In my career excel has been a huge part of achieving my targets and KPI which is not only limited to my daily job but also in my personal life and education. I highly recommend excel to any Windows user and even Linux users because excel is such a great tool for accomplishing your work in a shorter span of time and user friendly. Excel can be used to assist with developing your reports in terms of its graphical features but it not a reporting tool. But excel is great for calculations, querying data from external sources, planning and putting data in a presentable format that audiences can relate and understand.

Pros

When I first started using Microsoft Excel I instantly realized how efficient this program was because it eliminated the use of pen and paper for me. The installation of the program is quick and easy with just a few clicks of the mouse and the program is ready to use. MS Excel enables me to work with multiple worksheets simultaneously and linking these worksheets together to create a graphical and tabular summary. My favorite feature in excel is the availability of various graphs and pivot charts that allows me to display complex data in simple format, so that my audience is able to absorb information faster and easily. Furthermore, excel has other great features which really helps in my daily job as an administrator when I need to export high volumes of data from application software or active directory. These functions include data filtering and sorting, and data calculation with a simple drag and highlighting of cells. I also love how you can easily customize the interface of the program to your liking. For me this feature is very important because it makes the program more user friendly and dynamic. Overall, the program is just amazing to use because its packed with so many features, that even I am still learning as I go along.

Cons

Th least thing I like about Microsoft Excel is that it starts to hang in an idle state when the file size increases and I have noticed this problem when the file starts to reach 350MB in size and beyond. Excel also contains a great deal of formulas and I found this quiet confusing when I started using the program, which resulted in watching a few tutorials first and doing further research on how to use these functionalities. The program also cannot run directly on the Linux operating system, and as a frequent user of both excel and Linux I would have preferred if this was possible. However, there are a few alternatives out there you can use to make this work, but I would not recommend it for a novice user.

Microsoft Excel - An Accountants Best Friend!

Reviewed on 14/5/2019

King of spreadsheet programs. Google sheets or any "free" suite programs don't compare to how powerful and easy Excel really is.

Pros

Everything, literally! Excel is and can be as powerful as you need it to be. For the casual user, it a wonderful spreadsheet program that you can use to track just about anything you need to. For the heavy user, with the proper training, trial and error, or simply using the "help" button, Excel has formulas, tables, and other options that will allow you to track, analyse, and present your financial information like never before. Formulas, pivot tables, and copy/pasting will make your job so much easier and cut down on the manual data entry and manual having to add number together. I've built everything from a simple electronic checkbook register to extensive financial reports that only require you to copy your financial data from your account system and paste it into excel. And without doing anything else, you can have all the financial reports that you need.

Cons

To get technical this is one thorn in my side when it comes to Excel formulas. When using an "IF" formula that states to perform a mathematical function "IF" a particular set of cells meets a certain criteria. For Example: SUMIF Column A is "greater that 1" or IF Column A is "greater than one" sum what is in "Column B". The issue I have is working backwards to identify the cells that are being added that meet the criteria. When working with the small set of data, it isn't a problem. But if you have a long list of data, it nearly impossible without have to check yourself to determine when cells makes this statement true. Again, the casual user wouldn't understand this complaint.

Powerful tool for data visualization, analysis, calculation and presentations

Reviewed on 23/12/2019

We use Microsoft Excel to maintain large data set, perform calculations and data visualization across each department. We also use the excel spreadsheet as a client deliverable format as it is present, graphs and charts are easy to digest and allow easy modification at both ends.

Pros

Microsoft Excel spreadsheet is the most widely used tool across organizations to maintain a large data set in a tabular format, to perform calculations, for visualization and analysis. Excel supports basic mathematical functions including filter, sort, color code, add, subtract, multiply, divide to much-advanced formulas such as pivot table, if-else etc. for data manipulation. Excel has built-in support for macros which can automate your manual task and can save a lot of time. Even if you are naïve user of excel and want to apply some functions, user community support is quite extensive. All you have to do is just type ‘how to do XYZ in excel’ and you would get ready answers. Excel is also very useful tools for basic graphs and charting and if you want to take analytics to a pro-level then it supports integration with advanced analytics tools such as Power BI. Autosave feature and excel subscription as a part of Office 365 allow you to save your excel files on the cloud which can be accessed anywhere using internet connectivity.

Cons

Features on Excel mobile App are somewhat limited. Large size excel file makes your system slow, time-consuming and sometimes it even crashes. If you want pro-level expertise in Excel, you need to undergo training. The good part is that excel online tutorials are widely available across multiple platforms such as YouTube, Courseera, etc.
