GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

Open-source and on-premise image manipulation software

About GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

GIMP is an open-source image manipulation software that enables businesses, graphic designers, scientists, illustrators, and photographers to edit and retouch images, design icons, create free-hand artworks, and convert files into various formats. The platform uses several programming languages, such as C++, Python, Scheme, and Perl to edit and manipulate scripted images.

GIMP allows businesses to select widget themes, icon sizes, and toolsets based on the artwork or design, save animations, and enhance images using various tools including the corrective mode and channel mixer. It provides several third-party plugins, enabling photographers to add multiple file formats and image filters to the software. Illustrators can utilize a suite of painting tools such as brush, pencil, clone, airbrush, and blend, among others to create artworks and designs according to individual requirements.

GIMP supports various file formats such as GIF, PDF, JPEG, SVG, and BMP and lets designers load or save files from remote locations using FTP, HTTP, SMB, and SFTP protocols. Businesses can utilize the storage space by saving documents with archived file extensions such as ZIP or GZ.

How i started as a Graphic Designer

Reviewed on 6/9/2022

Pros

In my opinion Gimp is really close to attaining a powerfull all-in-one image manipulation program like Photoshop, it has tons of great features and doesn't disappoint, all it takes to perform well and have good results is to practice and to learn how to access the tools.

Cons

To actually be proficient with the software you will need to read the manual, practice and watch videos in order to learn where and how you can use the features, i could be more intuitive.

So far the experience have been amazing , GIMP essential tools are great , easily on par with paid product from enterprise like Adobe Photoshop etc. If the support can be enhanced a bit , this will be killer open source product.

Pros

GIMP is a capable, adjustable and responsive tool. GIMP's brush based tools such as clone/healing , burn/dodge tool are the excellent , even with high resolution images it works like a charm. It allows a large degree of customization which is quite impressive.

Cons

GIMP's selection tools could be bit more user friendly especially with the advance/complicated settings option. Also the support for GIMP could be a bit better but since this is an open source project and not an enterprise product with dedicated support , we are highly grateful to the developers helping in providing support

Reasons for Choosing GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

Since adobe has switched most of its product onto a monthly subscription model rather than the single purchase system. It has become unfeasible for smaller studios/ hobbist like us to use their products.

Reasons for Switching to GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)

We choose GIMP because its an open source project, with a very good free version and a decent priced paid version which is really good at doing the essential task of photo editing for our small studio.

I use GIMP for image editing work for our website development work. It is free but also does not have a good UI.

Pros

As a software developer myself, I like that GIMP is an open source software available for free for everybody. It provides many features for editing images such as scaling, changing colors, removing background or editing it. It is possible to export the image in different extensions such as png, jpg or svg.

Cons

Unfortunately, GIMP does not come with a good UI and UX (user experience). Firstly, in the last versions it stopped working correctly on Ubuntu operating system and you cannot open files inside GIMP. It throws a permission issue. You need to right click the file and open it in GIMP. Due to its bad UX it requires some google search to figure out how to use most features.

Really helps when needed to alter an image such as removing a background colour or image or even creating an image from a photo and excluding or including other details onto the image.
Great for editing images.
Great for colouring comics as i do a lot of comics and illustration work, came in handy to give more clear colours especially with the quick selection tools.

Pros

- Being able to export to multiple formats.
- The editing tools and effects that could be applied to images to adjust the colours, brightness, contrast and saturation.
- The Features are great for making a digital painting or adding colours to comics, especially the tools that help the work proceed faster like magic wand select tool, colour selection, increasing the sharpness of an image or adding a other effects on the image.

Cons

- Has a bit of a learning curve and if you don't take some time to learn the software you may find yourself getting frustrated considering it has some differences from other similar software.

GIMP is nice to have for certian functions, and if a person can't afford their current program it will probably work as a free alternative.
I used GIMP to create images with vectors for my business and for customers. I don't use it daily because I just don't like it but it is nice to have incase I need it.

Pros

Who dosen't love free stuff? This is free software and great photo editing tools are provided. Open source. Most images files will open and GIMP supports plugins.
Color adjustment, bezier curves, noise reduction, filters, gradients, vector images and customisable brushes are provided. Resize without losing quality.
The GIMP community forum can help you if you get stuck or lost.

Cons

Ironically for software in the creative field, GIMP dosent look very nice. It's outdated and ugly to he honest.
The way GIMP operates is just very foreign to me and I don't like it. Everything is backwards from where it usually is.
