Mobile and web application development platform

About Firebase

Firebase, built on Google's cloud infrastructure, enables businesses to develop web and mobile applications with cloud storage, analytics, and messaging capabilities. Features include authentication, crash reporting, offline access, alerts, remote configuration, and prediction.

Cloud Firestore, the NoSQL document database, lets developers store, sync, and run queries while building apps. It automatically synchronizes app data between devices and sends update notifications to users. Developers can also create trigger functions to determine data changes, new user sign-ups, or conversion events. Using Cloud Messaging, project owners can create targeted messages using predefined segments based on the receiver’s demographics and behavior, set up message publishing schedules, and specify frequency limits for the number of views.

Firebase offers integration with various third-party applications such as Slack, PagerDuty, and Jira along with Google's native platforms including Google Ads, Play Store, and BigQuery. The application helps managers diagnose and view app performance through a Firebase console and run custom tests throughout the app development lifecycle.

I've had an amazing experience using Firebase. From the ease of integration with my apps to the array of powerful features available, Firebase has exceeded my expectations in every way. The real-time database, authentication, cloud functions, and hosting services have been particularly useful in simplifying and enhancing the development process. Additionally, the comprehensive documentation and excellent customer support have made using Firebase a seamless and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend Firebase to anyone looking for a reliable and efficient backend solution for their apps.

Pros

I adore Firebase for a variety of reasons. Its simplicity of usage is one of the things I appreciate most. Building and managing a range of applications, whether they are for the web or mobile, is incredibly easy with Firebase. In particular, its real-time database, cloud features, and hosting capabilities are amazing and simplify development. Additionally, Firebase offers great analytics tools that enable me to watch app performance, understand user behavior, and make data-driven decisions to enhance my apps. Overall, Firebase is a fantastic app development platform that is simple to use, has a wide variety of functionality, and is a great option for both seasoned developers and newbies.

Cons

I have thoroughly enjoyed using Firebase and have not encountered any major issues or concerns. The platform is intuitive and easy to navigate, and the documentation is clear and helpful.

Firebase, probably the best existing database.

Reviewed on 18/9/2023

Pros

I appreciate its seamless integration, real-time database capabilities, and scalability. Its user-friendly interface, robust authentication, and cloud functions make app development efficient and effective.

Cons

While Google Firebase offers many benefits, I found its pricing structure, especially for high-traffic apps, to be complex and potentially costly. Managing costs and understanding pricing tiers required ongoing attention and consideration.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Azure

Reasons for Switching to Firebase

My overall experience with Firebase, having guided its selection, has been largely positive. It's user-friendly, offers real-time database features, and simplifies authentication and hosting. However, the pricing model can be complex, necessitating careful cost management to avoid unexpected expenses.

This was good because the client then didn't want to pay for an SDK tracking.
However in terms of usability and scaling for larger, business campaigns, this is not recommended.

If you're a hobbyist delving into apps and SDKs for fun, this is a great platform.

Pros

It's free and a good introduction to SDK, environments and requirements.
It also is great if you're on the google stack, as it easily imports into other ad buying platforms like google ads, which is great.

Has some integrations with networks, which also is great since it's also free for use

Cons

Highly limited support - don't expect to get any.
If you're on the free plan, very limited functionality. You can't even get CSV user reports. Everything is on and limited by the UI. This apparently changes if you're on paid, but the free experience not the best.

No integration to other competitors like Facebook, etc

For beginner and small project where small amount of data is processed, this could be the best to go for. But for large scale data processing, more integration of other software is needed.

Pros

Our company has built software and hardware project based on client needs. Most of the time,it involved real time data upload to server and accessing those. Also, analysing some portion of data was done by Java,NodeJs which was part of firebase coding section. It seemed easy to learn and implement.

Cons

The login and certification seems lengthy. Also, while moving large scale data, it gets stuck and takes time to process.

Firebase was a great first platform, but for my usecase I ended up outgrowing it pretty quickly. It's great if you're building for native mobile.

Pros

Extremely easy-to-use APIs, and out-of-the-box authentication and offline-database features to make bootstrapping an app super easy.

Cons

Extreme vendor lock-in, heavily mobile focused with very few features suitable for web and hybrid applications and preventatively expensive scaling
