StoryXpress

Cloud-based video creating, hosting and recording software

About StoryXpress

StoryXpress is a cloud-based video creation and hosting software designed to help businesses record, upload, edit and optimize videos using a Google Chrome plugin, drag-and-drop interface, white-labeling capabilities, and more on a centralized platform. Managers can add annotations in the form of call to actions, meeting bookings, banners or online forms to capture leads and utilize the built-in player to stream embeddable, mobile-responsive, and high-resolution videos.

StoryXpress allows organizations to add corporate logos, banners, colors, player styles, covers, and other specifications to customize the platform and establish brand identity with clients. Marketers can create playlists by compiling videos in a sequence to enhance total number of views, allocate workspaces to teams, and configure access permissions for them according to requirements.

Administrators can use StoryXpress to record videos without watermarks to create tutorials, training sessions or walk-throughs for customers and embed them in webpages, blogs, emails, social media, and streaming platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Supervisors can also track the number of views, watch time, and user engagement metrics based on location or devices using actionable analytics.

StoryXpress facilitates integration with various third-party human resources (HR), marketing, sales, communication, and other systems such as Freshchat, Zendesk, Gmail, Slack, HubSpot, and more. Other features include password protection, A/B Testing, notifications, and offline recording.

Great screen capture tool for onboarding, sales and more

We've been very satisfied with the whole experience. There are similar tools, but the pricing here is better for light to moderate use, and you also get to customize the branding of your video player, which our previous tool didn't.

Pros

Creating, uploading and sharing videos with StoryXpress is very easy and that alone has made this a very useful app in our toolset. Once the browser extension is installed you just need to click the extension icon to start recording (either your screen, your webcam, or both). You also have different tools to emphasize parts of the screen, like annotations and such. It has been really helpful to record instructions on how to use a feature in our software, record bugs so dev team can replicate them, or even sending personalized videos in sales emails. The fact you can customize the branding on the video player page is also great.

Cons

As it only has a browser extension, the webcam overlay and the recording tools can only be displayed over a browser window. You can record the whole screen and any part of your computers windows, but once you switch to another application the webcam overlay goes away (until you come back to the browser). In opur use case this is minor, but if you'll use this to do walkthroughs of non-web apps, then it might be an issue.
Also, I had a problem with the extension not being able to upload videos. It went away after reinstalling, but it was a minor setback nonetheless.

A must-have tool for content desktop creators/instructors/remote team

I am the team leader of a remote service agency. I need to create a lot of instructional videos for my team mates and my clients. I also creat how to videos for content marketing. For these purposes I used Screencastify and Loom, both were free and came with limitations. Since I switched to StoryXpress' Clapboard app, with a lifetime license, it has replaced all other apps. On top of that, it is also providing insights and analytics that were not available even in other apps paid versions. Eagerly waiting for the desktop version of StoryXpress' Clapboard

Pros

I really like the depth of the video analytics they offer. Not only each view of the video is counted, but they also show which device was used and which segment of the video the viewer was paying attention to. This helped me a lot in improving video copy and presentation style.

The on-screen drawing and annotation tools are very handy for instructional videos as well

Cons

The video upload speed could do with improvements. With weaker connections, it sometimes takes longer to upload longer videos. For small video clip makers, this is not a problem though; it generally happens when you are loading videos of 1 hour or longer duration.

They currently dont have a desktop app, which is also a drawback. But I was notified by their support that they will be launching this in Q3 2020. It should also improve the uploading speed issue. Something to look forward to in 2020 ha!

The other products were more complex, even though they have more editing features. Since I dont need much in the way of editing, I opted for StoryXpress.

I had to do so many recording do-overs that I'm still not using the product most of the time. I keep trying it every few weeks, but every recording is resulting in inconsistent footage, out of sync, or with 20 frames per second resulting in a choppy video. When I try Loom, I don't have this issue.

Pros

Recording and embedding video's on the fly while sharing your screen.

Cons

Most of the time, my video's are not uploaded smoothly. Costing me hours and hours of time to record them correctly.

I am using StoryXpress Recorder mainly for remote communication with my team members. There haven't been any glitches and the product simplicity and ease of use feels premium. In a couple of scenarios, I also used it to pitch to prospective clients about our service and used the Calendly Integration to get the meeting booked.

Pros

The ease of use of the recorder, the highlighter tools and their blazing fast download speed. It took less than a minute to new team members to understand how to use the extension.
The video editing feature to crop, blur and trim also help in hiding sensitive information that gets visible while accidently recording from webcam or screen.

Cons

Nothing specifically in unlikable, they have given so many features at such affordable cost as compared to Loom or Vidyard. I really liked their folder feature which was removed in between and seems like it will be coming soon.

Alternatives Considered

Wistia, Vidyard, Loom and Screencastify

Reasons for Choosing StoryXpress

Loom is very restrictive and in try to live by their perception of ease of use, they are not building any features to improve the platform since last one year.

Switched From

Loom

Reasons for Switching to StoryXpress

Mainly because of ease of use, abundant features with respect to video editing, customization and integrations and really affordable pricing. In the lite plan, it is worth just a cup of coffee for a full months usage.

It's been great, I got the deal on appsumo so for a very small investment I have gotten a ton of value

Pros

Love how simple it is to use, easy to customize the appearance of videos and with the new editing tools I can easily crop and trim up the videos I create.

This has been an awesome solution for both quick tutorials and for adding a video component to all of our proposals and reports. Being able to walk a client through these documents by video and then also know if/when they actually viewed them is awesome.

Cons

A few times my videos have failed to process, although that has been a while so the issue seems to be resolved. I would love to be able to completely hide the controls on some videos but closing them works just fine

Camtasia

Reasons for Choosing StoryXpress

I used to use Jing for short video instructions. It was problematic because the videos were in swf format and so most people couldn't view them on mobile devices. That tool was discontinued by TechSmith and I considered purchasing Camtasia, but haven't needed to because I can do everything I need to with StoryXpress

Reasons for Switching to StoryXpress

I could buy it at a one-time very low price through AppSumo
