About QuickBooks Payroll
QuickBooks Payroll is a complete payroll management platform for small businesses that provides companies with complete control over their employee salary calculations and labor hours. The payroll solution incorporates an internal calculator which automatically assesses tax returns based on the amount of employee hours entered.
QuickBooks Payroll lets users enter the salaries and hours of employees, then allocates staff wages to their linked accounts. Full tax reports can also be viewed and return payments are automatically calculated and can be processed within a matter of seconds. Tax returns can be managed based on geographical location to abide by state employment laws.
All data entered into QuickBooks Payroll is completely transparent and users can view real-time reports which can be exported to Excel spreadsheets. The complete backend dashboard is optimised for mobile devices giving users the ability to control payroll operations whilst out of office. Once logged in, QuickBooks Payroll lets users add, edit and execute payment tasks, and generates notifications for important updates.
Key benefits of QuickBooks Payroll
• QuickBooks Payroll fully automates tax calculations for employee paychecks, and monitors local, state, and federal taxes for updates.
• The online employee portal allows employees to view their W-2s and pay stubs at any time.
• Self-service payroll lets users prepare and file their own tax forms, and QuickBooks Payroll also offers a full service option which provides US-based support for state and federal forms and payments.
• Payroll can be run as many times as required with no extra fees, and users can create additional checks and bonuses outside of regularly scheduled payroll.
• Native iOS and Android mobile apps allow users to create paychecks, electronically pay taxes and file forms, pay workers, receive reminders, view paycheck histories, and more from anywhere.

QBO Payroll is the easiest way to manage your small business payroll

If you are already a QBO user and have a small to medium work force this is the your best bet. It works within your existing QBO file, so no need for double entry and tax filing is an easy to follow step-by-step process.
Pros
No more double entry when you run payroll through your existing QBO file!
Cons
This might not be the right solution for larger companies who have greater HR needs then just cutting a paycheck each pay period, though it is not difficult to set up employee deductions for things like health care, retirement plans, etc.

Very good to outstanding overall. The software itself is very good and keeps improving. Also, as the market leader, they have many local CPA's that integrates into the software as "local experts", so when I have a question I can typically ask my CPA firm and they can help, or whenever there has been a problem that they can't solve, they are able to contact support on my behalf. Overall the system works pretty well.
Pros
The payroll service is really easy overall. All the tasks that I use are quite simple to navigate around, including adding new employees, paying employees, and sending out payroll liability payments. These are what I do most often and they've been really simplified by Quickbooks.
Other functions that I use are payroll deductions (401k, etc), tracking sick/vacation time, and managing direct deposit.
Another feature I like (part of QB Online, not sure about Desktop), is that employees are emailed a link to join their payroll management website, where they can access payroll stubs, W2's etc. It has made managing a lot of the HR parts of hiring employees much more streamlined.
Cons
Not really a con, but I don't have any experience with any of the direct competitors, e.g. Freshbooks, Sage, Xero, etc., so I can't say if Quickbooks does anything better or worse than those others.
But what I can say is that I did switch from Quickbooks Desktop to Quickbooks Online, which is a much better experience overall (although more expensive).

If you have a simple payroll this is not a terrible product. If you have employees in multiple states, I would not recommend.
Pros
The integration with Quickbooks online was a key factor. It is also very easy to use once the setup is complete.
Cons
The customer service is non-existent. I have a client that uses the full service payroll, and if there is an error where Quickbooks is at fault, it is impossible to ever get them to pay for the error, they will admit the responsibility, but they will not pay for the responsibility. The customer service is tiered so you never speak to a decision maker even when the error is a significant dollar amount. I had this issue in two cases. 1. Quickbooks processed a duplicate payroll costing my client $15,000+ and despite full documentation that they were responsible, they would not pay for the error. 2. I set up a new client on full service payroll with employees in the state of Nevada. QB did not support filing one of the taxes required for the state. They did not disclose this and admitted that they did not disclose at the beginning nor did they prompt the client to file the return when it came due. Quickbooks did take responsibility for the error by admitting it, but they would not take responsibility for the taxes and penalties.

A Good, Basic Way to Run Payroll

Overall I have had a positive experience with QuickBooks Payroll over the past 8 years. It is a good way to run payroll.
Pros
Payroll is my favorite thing about QuickBooks. It eliminates the need to mail forms, and figures out deductions and taxes for the user.
Cons
You have to be careful to select the correct pay period. If it is past the date of the payroll period, it will go to the next pay period, and so you must be careful to change that. Also, I think it could be a bit more user friendly in a general sense. I'd also like to see more customer service for support and/or questions.

The software continues to be very efficient and provides ease of use. However, the confidence I have in customer service is what makes me stick with this software and not look elsewhere for an alternative.
Pros
Ease of implementation and constant guidance available from customer service to resolve any issue. Also the ability to access and run payroll from any device that can reach the internet provides so much productivity.
Cons
The Elite payroll service seems so restrictive. I cannot access many of the settings or execute many of the functions that I could through the Core payroll service. To change these settings I need to go through customer service, which was very confusing and frustrating during the implementation of the payroll service.
