VoIP software for phone calls, chats, and video conferencing

About Skype

Skype is a Microsoft tool for phone calls, video conferencing, chats, and messaging. The VoIP program is preinstalled on many Windows systems, and the basic version can be used free of charge. For business users, Skype offers only basic functions.

Skype has a number of other functions in addition to VoIP telephony to other Skype users, landlines, or cellular networks. Users can exchange messages and send files via Messenger. Conferences can be held with or without a video stream. The number of participants is limited to 50. In addition, Skype offers functions for screen sharing and meetings, a customizable interface, and a contact book. There is a scheduler for appointments so meetings can be time-limited.

Skype also offers integrated translation software. This can broadcast live conversations in another language. The translator waits for a sentence to finish, and then translates it as a subtitle. Users can be invited by phone, email, or link. There are also functions for surveys, recording, and private chats. The program complies with in-force data protection regulations. Data is protected with 256-bit TLS 1.2 encryption.

I love it very much. It was and still is my best friend. It helped me communicate with my family and friends with voice and video without interruption.

Pros

Nice program, easy to use, and very old, it helped me communicate with my family and friends for more than 15 years.
It is also free, the picture is very clear, the sound is clear, and it is compatible with all devices.

Cons

Expensive when we use it to call mobile, landline and international phones

Skype was a pioneer in VOIP. Unfortunately it does not hold up today.

My overall experience with skype was a very polarizing one. Kind of love-hate. It was cool to be able to message my contacts over the internet, but with that, came problems. Like random drop outs, robotic voices at times, and unfortunately not being able to call phone numbers without a separate purchase.

Pros

I liked how easy it was to contact and message people on the app. It was mostly seamless...mostly.

Cons

There were a lot of connection errors and dropouts the last time I used Skype. It used a very flawed protocol for VOIP and it showed a lot when calling others.

Reliable Online Communications with Skype

I've been using Skype since its inception and seen it go though its bad times and its good times and thanks to its backing by Microsoft find it to be a reliable platform.

Pros

Skype is a mature, reliable, and well established online VoIP platform backed by Microsoft and great solution fro communicating online with voice and video with one person or multiple people at once. Great for personal or business use. Oh, and it is free to get started.

Cons

Its feature set has not changed much for several years but it really doesn't have to as there are other platforms from Microsoft like Teams, and competitors like Zoom, 3CX and other voip service providers that provide same or similar features with more features.

Alternatives Considered

Zoom Workplace, Microsoft Teams, Zoom Phone and 3CX

Reasons for Switching to Skype

I've been a longtime user and have kept using along side new platforms.
