Harvest
About Harvest
Harvest is an online time and expense tracking tool for teams and projects of all sizes. Harvest harnesses the power of time tracking to help users answer critical questions about their team's time, project progress, and the health of the business. Plus, it turns billable time into invoices that make it easy to get paid online. Businesses can use Harvest to carry out time tracking, expense tracking, project management, billable hours tracking, task assignment, invoicing, scheduling, and more.
One of the biggest challenges with tracking time is getting team members to do it. The Harvest app - available for Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android - makes time tracking easy for teams by letting them track time in the way that's easiest for them. Users can track time as they work - by starting a timer from their desktop, phone, or browser - or enter hours all at once, after they're done. Harvest even integrates with third party tools including Asana, Basecamp, and Trello - so that team members can track time from applications they already use.
Harvest also helps businesses put that timesheet data to work by turning it into intuitive, visual graphs that provide insight into teams and projects. Managers can see what each team member has worked on and what's taking up the most time. See project cost, how much time has been tracked to each project, how much budget is left, and how many billable hours have been worked. And when it's time to invoice clients, Harvest allows users to create an invoice right from the tracked time within the application. Email this data to each client and get paid online with the help of PayPal and Stripe integrations.
A monthly subscription to Harvest costs $12 USD/person/month (billed monthly) or $10.80 USD/person/month (billed annually). A free plan is available for single users. Discounts are available for nonprofit organizations and educational institutions.

A great time tracking/invoicing platform for people new to freelancing – or seasoned pros.

I've been using Harvest for well over a decade now, and I have no plans to switch. It's been with me through my first steps testing the waters of freelancing to going freelance full time. I make heavy use of the macOS app, which makes it easy for me to track my time throughout the day. And I rely on its invoicing and reporting features to get paid quickly and easily. What's not to love?
Pros
Harvest is easy to use, streamlined, with just the features I need and none of the features I don't. I primarily use it for time tracking and invoicing for my freelance business. There are enough configuration options for me to customize my time tracker and invoices for every client, and it takes just a minute or two to set up clients and send invoices.
Cons
Recently I've moved toward a monthly invoicing cycle, and there is no way for Harvest to automatically generate an invoice on the first of the month for all of the time tracked in the previous month. It's a small annoyance to make/send the invoice myself but a little more automation here would be welcome.

Tracks Time, Dimishes Trust with Employees

I personally did not solve any business problems using Harvest, nor did I see any benefit to me as an employee. The only benefit I could see to the employer was being able to play Big Brother by using Harvest to monitor every second of my day. This software contributes to a corporate culture of distrust.
Pros
The only thing good I can say that I like about Harvest is that it is pretty easy to use. You simply search the client or project name, indicate whether it is a billable or non-billable task and then set the timer. There is also a space to elaborate on the specific details of the task being done.
Cons
What I like the least about this software is that the tracking is too granular. Employees that are subject to using it feel like Big Brother is watching and that the employer doesn't trust them. It also doesn't allow for any explanation of extenuating circumstances. For example, if an employee is tracking within Harvest and is expected to track in real time, there is no way to explain a computer glitch or if a system crashes in the middle of a task and the employee has to re-do the task from the beginning. In addition, if you are a billable employee, you are literally tethered to your computer all day, as you must "Harvest" every minute of your day if the employer wants an accurate read of activity. It is tedious and demeaning.

It is easy to use and user friendly, even to those who have never used the platform.

There is currently no way to link tasks to specific user roles, however that is not a major issue.
